We Have Lost Something

This afternoon, Kieran lost his first tooth.

At 5 years old, it's a tad early, but then, the losing of this tooth was not really due to natural causes.

Last week, when picking Kieran up from school, his teacher pulled me aside. She informed me that Kieran had knocked a tooth loose. And, by loose, she meant REALLY loose. Upon examination, the tooth wiggled freely forward and back.

Apparently, Kieran had used his teeth to pry apart a jumble of Legos. It was this stupid misuse of dentition that caused the loosening.

Kieran was excited that he got to ice his mouth a little, though freaked out by the wiggliness of the tooth. He worried it constantly with his tongue or his finger. The receptionist at the dentist's office said that if he wasn't in pain and he wasn't bleeding, he'd be fine; if the tooth came out early, no problem, the new one would grow in soon enough.

And, today, it finally came out. It popped right out of Kieran's mouth late this afternoon when he was using his teeth to pop the lid off an empty M&Ms tube. These boys never learn!

There was a little blood and a good cry, but eventually Kieran marveled at the tiny little thing that had once been in his mouth. Merely three hours later, after examining his tiny empty socket, I was amazed to discover it was already well healed.

We are all for silly kid fantasies, so we chatted up The Tooth Fairy and shamelessly used her to get Kieran to submit to his nightly parent-lead thorough tooth brushing and to a quick bedtime.

I encouraged him to make a special envelope first; something he could use to leave his tooth in for the magical little tooth stealer.



Sean and I printed off a very funny letter from The Tooth Fairy and swapped it for the wee tooth, plus a twoonie ($2 coin). I can't wait to see Kieran with his letter in the morning. Funny stuff! Go to toothfairydoll.com now and check out the link to the letter.
