Katrina

Boing Boing: Email attributed to NOLA rescue worker; economics of disaster

The people who have perished or been harmed because of Hurricane Katrina are in my heart, as are their families who must be scared and profoundly sad.

I gotta ask, though: why would you live in a place like coastal Florida which is regularly prey to severe weather or New Orleans which is in existence only because water was drained out of marshes (and so at constant risk of flooding from even regular storm weather)?

And, has anyone else realised that we are currently living in the global warming era?

May peace be upon the souls of the lost and hope within those of the living.

Hell Is Other Bloggers

The Sarcastic Journalist: N'Secure

I'm just not cool enough, not funny enough, not famous enough, not anonymous enough, not moneyed enough, not prolific enough, not motivated enough, not serious enough, not smart enough, not worshipped enough. I could go on, but even I'm bored with the whining.

Some bloggers have a "What I'm Reading" list on their site. ManicMom is reading Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. Freaking Tolstoy! Sarnomical has Prague: A Novel and God and the Philosophers: The Reconciliation of Faith and Reason on her list of current reads. Sweetney is reading The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance by Laurie Garrett.

If I had a "Reading Now" list it would consist of: Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton. Yes, that's a sci fi paperback. Gawd, how unsmart of me. I'm just not as smart as other bloggers.

Some bloggers post about all the crafty things they make. Daphne Blue has crocheted fruit and veggies and a market back for her daughter to play with. This was a few days after she crocheted a soaker (diaper cover) for her daughter and I saw on a blog somewhere that she also sent someone a cute orange shrug, also likely crocheted! It goes on and on! hopskipjump sews gorgeous soft sculptures. And then there is the incomparable Loobylu who aslo makes soft scultptures and who started the very popular A Month of Softies.

Chevron Scarf, from Last Minute Knitted Gifts If I were to write about my crafty stuff I would tell you about the beautiful scarf I am making for myself (or someone else if I need a gift right away). It is from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. This book is brilliant and makes simple, elegant and interesting projects for the lazy, er, time-challenged knitter. Like me!

I probably wouldn't tell you about the massive amount of papercraft supplies I'm amassing for the scrapbooks I'm never going to complete! Or the piles of yarn spilling onto floors and the accompanying knitting pattern magazines and books which I do little more than droll on. Yeah, I won't talk about that. It'll just show what a lazy clod I am.

Other bloggers show me up. Damn them! They have to be wittier than I am, more prolific writers. Heck, most of 'em are better writers!

Me, I just seem to whine a lot.

Time to stop whining.

I'll show them!

I think I'll start by having a shower. I mean, it is 11am and all.

By the hair of my chinny chin chin

It is a fact of life that every few days a woman must do the finger-tip test.

You very gently run your fingertips along the underside of your chin and neck and feel for a stray mannish hair amongst the girly down. With shiny plucking tool in hand, you pull that sucker out before it becomes long enough to become a noose in your sleep.

It is very disconcerting to suddenly notice a 2-inch long hair at the base of your neck, despite semi-weekly chin checks.

Thing 486 about being a woman they didn't tell you: it isn't just the mediterranean girls and weird grammas who get beards!

Re-Define

finslippy: BlogHer, BlogMe

I'm with Sweetney, I'm a Mutha Blogga.

Mommyblogging is for the haters.

And, just because that came totally out of left field, I have been doing some research on blogging for an article I'm working on and have been reading about the BlogHer '05 conference via Finslippy, Suburban Bliss, Dooce and whoever they link to.

It sounds wonderful. Maybe I'll be able to go next year. Maybe their inspiration will pay off with better writing on this site.

But, yeah, I love that term Mutha Blogga. It's got bite.

Back!

We went to Port Dover this weekend. That's where Sean's Dad and sister live. We went out on the boat, anchored and swam for a few hours. I also got a lot of knitting done. Life is calmer.

Have you checked out the latest PalmCast?

Well? What are you waiting for?!
